Tel Megiddo

A "Tel" is essentially a mound of multiple archaeological ruins built on top of one another.  Tel Megiddo is an ancient city, really cities, that were built on top of each other and now allow archaeologists to study multiple civilizations at the same time.  In Tel Megiddo, there are 26 layers of ruins.

Possibly Remains of a House

These are the ruins of a 5,000 year old temple and altar.  This is at the 1st layer, or lowest layer, of the 26 layers of ruins.

Close-up of the altar.  Archaeologists determined that the altar was the site of ritual animal sacrifices, mostly young lambs and goats, but also cattle.

A feeding trough found in the area of the southern stables

Here you can see how the feeding troughs were set up.  Archaeologists found teeth imprints on the edges of the feeding troughs.
