The Tower of David

Just inside the Jaffa Gate is the Tower of David, an ancient citadel that dates to the time of the Ottoman Empire.  It stands on the site of earlier citadels from the Hasmonean, Herodian-era, Byzantine, and early Muslim periods.  The site contains important archaeological finds dating back 2,000 years, including a quarry that dates to the time of the First Temple.  The name, "Tower of David", comes from the Byzantine Christians who thought the site was at one time the palace of King David and took the name from the Song of Songs - chapter 4, verse 4 -  "Thy neck is like the Tower of David built with turrets, whereon there hang a thousand shields, all the armor of the mighty men."
