The Church of St Anne

The Church of St Anne is a Roman Catholic church in the Muslim Quarter of the old city of Jerusalem.  It is near the start of the Via Dolorosa and stands at the site of the Pool of Bethesda.  The church was built between 1131 and 1138 and was named for the mother of the Virgin Mary, who was believed to live at this location.

The church possesses amazing acoustics, probably perfect for Gregorian chant, with sounds moving across the open space and up from the grotto. This makes the church a pilgrimage site for soloists and choirs.  When we arrived on the site a group was singing, very softly, but you could hear every word throughout the entire church.
